Oakland Township Parks and Recreation and Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve have partnered to bring Oakland Township residents and others exciting new programs at Lost Lake Nature Park. Family, friends and neighbors are invited to explore everything this partnership has to offer.
Open houses are FREE! Open houses are FUN! Open Houses are for EVERYONE! The nature center will be open for four drop-in hours! Along with being able to explore this unique and magnificent park we will have themed activities and discussions on a monthly topic. We encourage you to make a day of your adventure and bring a picnic lunch to enjoy a scenic view of our secluded Lost Lake from beneath the canopy of some impressive white pines. Each month features its own unique natural topic with materials and activities for adults and children alike, free snacks, and crafts and games for our youngest participants.

When you really put the forest floor on a pedestal and examine it, things can get kind of gross really quickly. All that nutritious and delicious dark fertile soil is made from the remains of living things. Mostly organic plant material, but the occasional squirrel, roly-poly and deer are an essential part of the forest floor's ecosystem. Everything eventually perishes and returns to the ground to feed new life. Join us as we take a fascinating look at decomposition! We will look at how carbon is stored in life before being released back into the world, how entire communities can survive off of a fallen tree for years and even watch a worm poop! The perfect topic to explore right before Halloween! Our youngest explorers will have the opportunity to put together their own wiggly worm bookmarks to take home!
