Lost Lake Nature Park, Lost Lake Trail, Oakland Township, MI
Oakland Township Parks and Recreation and Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve have partnered to bring Oakland Township residents and others exciting new programs at Lost Lake Nature Park. Family, friends and neighbors are invited to explore everything this partnership has to offer.
Open houses are FREE! Open houses are FUN! Open Houses are for EVERYONE! The nature center will be open for four drop-in hours! Along with being able to explore this unique and magnificent park we will have themed activities and discussions on a monthly topic. We encourage you to make a day of your adventure and bring a picnic lunch to enjoy a scenic view of our secluded Lost Lake from beneath the canopy of some impressive white pines. Each month features its own unique natural topic with materials and activities for adults and children alike, free snacks, and crafts and games for our youngest participants.
September 26, 2021 12-4pm Replanting a Forest
Meets at Lost Lake Nature Park, 846 Lost Lake Trail, Oakland Township Michigan
As the temperatures drop, so do the acorns, the samaras, the chestnuts and so many other seeds as they initiate the first step of their lengthy lifespans. Between the burrs, the nettles, the wild berries and more it's no wonder that the squirrels are having a feeding and collecting frenzy out there in the woods this time of year! Join us as we examine seed dispersal in the forest. We will look at examples of flying seeds, sticky seeds, exploding seeds, and aquatic hitchhikers! We will even look at seeds beneath a microscope to see their incredibly fine details up close! Our youngest participants will even be putting together their own acorn handprints to take home (just keep them away from the squirrels!)
